Which A/C Compressor Mounting Hole Gets the Longer Bolt?
A common question during 2005 Chevrolet Astro / GMC Safari 4.3L Vortec A/C compressor replacement: three bolts are the same length, one is longer — which hole does it go in? The honest answer is that it depends on your specific compressor, bracket stack, and any prior repairs. Why One Bolt Is Longer
One bolt is longer because the material the bolt must clamp through is thicker at that specific location. That extra thickness usually comes from one or more of:
- A thicker compressor mounting ear at one corner.
- A step, boss, or reinforcement on the compressor bracket.

- Keep the compressor square and fully seated against the bracket. Do not tilt it to “fish” a bolt into a hole — that hides misalignment.
- Compare mounting-ear and bracket-stack thickness at all four locations. Look for the corner where the combined material the bolt must clamp through (ear + bracket + any spacer or accessory bracket) is visibly thickest.
- Compare available threaded-hole depth at each position with a zip tie, a small screwdriver, or a depth gauge. Mark or note each depth. Remember: what matters is usable thread depth relative to the total thickness the bolt must pass through, not raw hole depth alone.
- Start every bolt by hand, several turns, before using any tool. A bolt that will not spin freely by hand is in the wrong hole or is cross-threading — stop.
- Confirm the long bolt does not bottom out before it clamps the compressor. There should be visible clamping travel remaining when the head contacts the ear.
- Confirm each short bolt still has adequate thread engagement — as a general shop rule, engagement of at least the bolt’s nominal diameter in the threaded material. If a short bolt runs out of thread before it clamps, it is in the deep/thick position and needs the longer bolt.
- Never use an impact to seat, start, or “test” a bolt in an unknown position.
