Crossover steering — what it means
Crossover steering routes the drag link across the vehicle to a high-mounted knuckle arm on the opposite side. This geometry reduces bump steer over a wider travel range compared with “Y” or reverse-Y layouts. Achieving it requires matched components: steering box, pitman arm, drag link, tie rod, and knuckle arms designed to work together.

Geometry checks that must all pass
- Bump steer: at full bump and full droop, the tires should not toe in or out significantly.
- Ackermann: inside/outside wheel angles during a turn approximate the correct geometry for the wheelbase and track.
- Caster: enough positive caster for stability and self-centering without over-rotating the pinion.
- Steering stops: physical stops prevent tire-to-frame or link-to-diff contact at full lock.
- Scrub radius: affects steering feel and wheel-bearing loading.
Steering box choice
Match the steering box to axle weight, tire size, and driving loads. Undersized boxes wear quickly under heavy tires. Frame reinforcement at the box mount is common and worth planning. Hydraulic assist is an option, not a requirement — assess it against measured effort, not forum consensus.
Validation checklist
- Bump-steer measurement at ride, bump, and droop.
- Toe consistent within target through travel.
- Steering effort measured (not felt).
- No interference at full lock, both directions.
- Return-to-center behavior tested at low speed.
