GM 4.3L V6 Vortec, 1996–2005 window

The 4.3L V6 spans multiple fuel-system generations in this era — TBI on early trucks, CPI (Central Port Injection), CSFI (Central Sequential Fuel Injection), and later MPFI. Astro and Safari vans track this evolution but package the engine in a mid-engine doghouse layout that dramatically changes what is accessible in the vehicle. This explorer maps systems and components rather than year-specific calibrations.

Under the hood of an S10 / Blazer

  • Engine sits forward, ahead of the firewall.
  • Distributor at the rear is against the firewall but reachable from above.
  • Both banks of spark plugs generally serviceable from wheelwells and top.

Inside the Astro / Safari doghouse

  • Engine sits between and behind the front seats under a cover.
  • Distributor is deep against the interior firewall — one of the least accessible points.
  • Rear spark plugs typically require partial doghouse removal.
  • Front accessory drive is best accessed from the front of the vehicle.
  • Starter is nearly always a from-below job.

What becomes hard once the engine is in the van

  • Doghouse

    The engine cover between the front seats gives access to the top and sides of the engine — plenum, throttle body, coils on some years.

  • Distributor

    Sits at the rear of the engine against the firewall. One of the most difficult ignition components to service in the van.

  • Spark plugs

    Both banks are tight; rear plugs typically require partial doghouse removal or working from the wheelwell area.

  • Starter

    Best accessed from below with the van safely supported.

  • Front accessory drive

    Belt, tensioner, and water pump are reached from the front of the vehicle with the grille assembly considered.

  • Rear engine / bellhousing

    Everything at the flywheel plane is hidden by the doghouse and firewall — plan trans-in-vehicle work carefully.

CPI/CSFI 'spider' fuel-system aging

Nylon fuel lines to the poppet nozzles are known to degrade over decades, presenting as hot-start problems, long crank, and fuel-trim drift. Verify with a fuel pressure gauge and physical inspection.

Lower intake gasket end-rail seepage

External coolant weep at the front and rear of the lower intake is a widely reported pattern on this engine family. Confirm before disassembly.

Rear-of-engine location and van heat soak accelerate cap and rotor wear. Symptom is misfire and hard start; inspect the cap interior.

Silicone fluid loss in the clutch produces overheating at low road speed and normal temperatures on the highway.
