Front Brakes, Hydraulic Balance, ABS, and Legal Safety
Hydraulic balance, master/booster capacity, ABS integration, and jurisdiction implications of disabling safety systems.
Front brake selection follows the axle
Donor calipers, rotors, and hoses come with the axle. Their swept area and piston volume must be balanced against the rear brakes and the master-cylinder capacity. A big front rotor with an undersized master cylinder gives a soft pedal and long stops; an oversized front caliper with the original master cylinder can lock fronts before rears do useful work.
Master / booster capacity
- Total system fluid displacement per pedal stroke must match combined caliper/wheel-cylinder volume.
- Booster capacity must overcome pad-to-rotor knock-back at higher pedal effort.
- Hydroboost is one option when engine vacuum is insufficient — assess after measuring, not before.
Stop-work · Do not casually disable ABS
ABS & wheel-speed sensors
- Solid axle wheel ends must accept your ABS tone ring / sensor arrangement, or you must adapt.
- If sensors are removed, expect ABS/traction fault lights and possible PCM behavior changes.
- Some builders relocate the front WSS to a driveshaft speed sensor — this is a design decision, not a bolt-on.
Line routing & protection
- Hard lines must be protected from grinding sparks, steering shaft motion, and rock strikes.
- Flex hoses must have full travel from bump to droop with no tension and no rubbing.
- Consider a proportioning valve to re-balance front/rear after axle and tire changes.
Validation
- Static leak-down test after bleed.
- Controlled parking-lot stops — even, straight, no pull.
- Measured stopping distance test on a private surface before public-road driving.

- • Brake balance is determined by piston area, rotor swept area, master-cylinder displacement, and pad friction — all four.

- • Program will retain ABS and integrate wheel-speed sensors.

- • Chosen master/booster combination — pending front caliper/rotor decision.
- • Legal requirements in Darren's jurisdiction (BC, Canada) — verify with insurer/inspector.
